The Philip Serafim Undergraduate and Master’s Thesis Achievement Award

The Circle of Hellenic Academics in Boston invites nominations for its annual Undergraduate and Master’s Thesis Achievement Award. The Award, accompanied by a check of $500, is named in honor of professor Philip Serafim, one of the founding members of the Circle. Eligible candidates are undergraduate or graduate master’s students in any university with Hellenic heritage.

This award was first established in 2022 and was modified in 2023 to research achievement by undergraduate or MS students of Greek heritage.

Nominations fulfilling the requirements described below should be received by May 31, 2023.

Philip Serafim (1937 – February 9, 2021) was a Greek American electrical engineer who served as a Professor at the Brooklyn Polytechnic in New York City, the National Technical University in Greece, and at Northeastern University.

An inspiring lecturer with a deep commitment to his students and the recipient of many best teacher awards at Northeastern University.

His love for Greece and its culture led to his serving the Maliotis Cultural Center as President of the Board and becoming a founding member of the Circle of Hellenic Academics in Boston.

ELIGIBILITY:

Undergraduate and graduate master’s students who have graduated from any University, have defended a thesis and can claim Hellenic heritage.

 

NOMINATION:

A nomination may be made by a faculty member who knows the student, including the thesis advisor. The following items must be emailed as separate or combined PDF files to the address below:

  1. An Adobe Acrobat PDF digital copy of the thesis, including an abstract in English
  2. One or, preferably, two supporting letters from academics who know the applicant’s work
  3. A curriculum vitae/resume of the nominee, and
  4. Proof of Hellenic descent (see details below)
  5. PDF copies of up to two publications (if any) emanating from the thesis.

Nomination and supporting letters should be written in English to be readable by an interdisciplinary committee of other academics, not necessarily specialists in the research field of the nominee.

CRITERIA:

  1. The judges, members of the Circle of Hellenic Academics, will consider originality, significance, quality, and other criteria of excellence normally accepted in evaluations of student work.
  2. The nominee’s potential and promise as a future researcher/scholar will be given special consideration.

DEADLINE: ALL nominations and supporting material must be received by May 31, 2023.

Acceptable proof of Hellenic descent: A signed statement by the candidate declaring that he/she or his/her parent or grandparent holds or held Greek or Cypriot citizenship. A copy of an appropriate official document, such as a passport or identity card, supporting the candidate’s declaration should also be submitted along with the signed statement.
